The assessment of the toxicokinetic of titanium tetrachloride and its hydrolysis products (TiOCl2, TiO2, HCl) showed no potential for bioaccumulation of titanium species in mammals.

Titanium tetrachloride reacts violently with water to form titanium dioxide (TiO2) and hydrochloric acid (HCl). Titanium oxychloride (TiOCl2) is only formed as intermediate in moistened air and directly reacts to the former two substances in contact with water. Therefore the toxicokinetic consideration can focus on the behaviour of titanium dioxide (TiO2). As the substance is barely soluble even at high pH values a systemic absorption is negligible and accordingly there is no potential for bioaccumulation of titanium species in mammals.

This assessment is in line with the statement on the toxicokinetic of TiO2 in the respective REACH dossier of 2011.

This assessment does not cover the discussion on the toxicokinetic of TiO2 nanoparticles which is an emerging issue and the focus of ongoing fundamental research and the present database does not allow a solid assessment. To date it seems that the toxicokinetic of nanoparticles is mainly a cause of the size and only to a lesser extent determined by the chemical nature of the substance.
