- Details on test solutions:
- The test substance was added directly into the aquaria, without using carrier or solvent. The test solutions were stirred for 1 minute. The test substance was stated to be insoluble in water, the amount of test substance added to the water in this way is referred to as nominal concentration, and should not be confused with the actual, but unknown, concentration in the water phase. The solutions were prepared by the same procedure for renewal of the test solutions after 48 hours.
- Test organisms (species):
- other: Scophthalmus maximus
- Details on test organisms:
- - The Scophthalmus maximus used in the test were hatched 28.07.09 in Denmark, and were transported by car and airplane to Eurofins on 13.11.09.
- At Eurofins, they were held at a temperature of 16.0°C.
- In the test period the fish was 54 - 59 mm long, and had an average weight of 3.6 g. - Test type:

- Nominal and measured concentrations:
- Nominal test concentration 18 mg/L
- Details on test conditions:
- TEST SYSTEM
- Two aquaria contained the reference substance 3,5-Dichlorophenol at 0.5 and 1.5 mg/L, and one aquarium contained the blank (10 litres of seawater with no added chemicals).
- Each aquarium contained 10 litres of test solutions and 7 test organisms.
- The aquaria were oxygenated during the test.
- The test is semi-static, in that all the solutions (including the blank) were renewed after 48 hours.
- The test was run under 12 hours light / 12 hours dark photoperiod
TEST MEDIUM / WATER PARAMETERS
- Natural seawater from an unpolluted site at about 80 m depths in Byfjord was collected from a tap.
- The seawater was oxygenated and temperature adjusted, before use as dilution water, control and for acclimation of the fish.
- The aquaria were filled with 5 litre of seawater before the test substance was added.
EFFECT PARAMETERS MEASURED
- Lethality (number of dead organisms) was registered daily by visual observation.
- Measurements of oxygen was done daily, temperature was measured at start, while pH and salinity were measured at start, day two and day four. - Reference substance (positive control):
- yes
- Remarks:
- 3,5-Dichlorophenol
- Duration:
- 96 h
- Dose descriptor:
- LC50
- Effect conc.:

- Nominal / measured:
- nominal
- Conc. based on:
- test mat.
- Basis for effect:
- mortality (fish)
- Details on results:
- No mortality was observed.
- Results with reference substance (positive control):
- The percentage mortality in the blank: was less than 10%, and the 96 hours test result with the 3,5dichlorphenol tumed out to be as expected.

Description of key information
With high probability sebacic acid is acutely not harmful to fish.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
Additional information
According to Paris Commission Guideline a limit test with the marine fish species Scophthalmus maximus was conducted [BASF SE, 2009]. The nominal test concentration of 18 mg/L was based on former results derived from the most sensitive test species of the other taxonomic groups. (48 h LC50 value of the marine copepod Acartia tonsa, cf. chapter 6.1.3). In the limit test with the marine fish no significant mortality occurred.
Furthermore, the toxicity of sebacic acid was tested on freshwater fish Brachydanio rerio in a semi-static limit test according to OECD 203 [Ausimont S.p.A., 1999]. The result with freshwater fish confirms the result from the marine species, since no mortality observed at the test concentration of 100 mg/L sebacic acid.
