Justification for read across

For Unrefined / acid treated oils, the long-term toxicity for fish endpoint is addressed by read across to long-term toxicity for Daphnia which is justified on the basis that toxic effects of hydrocarbons are primarily caused by narcosis, and occur in a narrow range of molar concentrations across aquatic taxa.

In a read-across key semi-static 21-day long-term Daphnia magna test (OECD 211; KS=1) using the WAF of Light Paraffinic Distillate (CAS 64741-50-0), ten replicate test chambers (each containing one daphnid) were prepared for each treatment group and control. Two actual loadings were tested, namely 0.1 and 1.1 mg/l. The 21 day NOELR for reproduction was 0.1 mg/l, the LOELR was 1.1 mg/l (ExxonMobil Biomedical Sciences (2012).
