Additional information

Studies on skin and eye irritation in laboratory animals are available, covering the entire range if soluble, moderately soluble and poorly soluble molybdenum substances and also all relevant valencies (i.e. molybdenum trioxide, molybdenum dioxide, molybdenum disulfide, sodium molybdate, ammonium dimolybdate and roasted molybdenite concentrate. None of the tested chemicals require classification as a skin or eye irritant, and to avoid further unnecessary testing, read-across is applied to other molybdenum substances, which are also assumed to be non-irritant/non-corrosive to skin and eyes.

Regarding respiratory irritation, read across from the substance MoO3to other molybdenum substances is applied. MoO3is considered to be a conservative surrogate for all other molybdenum substances, since it is a soluble substance and known to react slightly acidic in contact with aqueous media. However, no signs of respiratory irritation were observed in an acute inhalation toxicity study with MoO3(Leuschner, 2010) in which potential effects in the respiratory tract were assessed by means of extended histopathology of the respiratory tract. In addition, no significant substance-related effects were observed, indicating that respiratory irritation is not of specific concern for MoO3, nor for other molybdenum substances.
