Data platform availability banner - registered substances factsheets

Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

First-aid measures

In case of inhalation : Remove casualty to fresh air and keep at rest. Seek medical advice.

In case of contact with skin: Treat phosphorus burns by immediate immersion under water and call for medical assistance.

In case of contact with eyes: Rinse with plenty of water and seek medical advice.

In case of ingestion : Rinse mouth. Consult a doctor immediately. Do not stimulate to vomit

Advice to doctor : Symptoms after inhalation: coughing, photosensitivity.

Hazards: Danger of circulatory collapse. Treatment: it may be necessary to administer oxygen. After skin contact mecanically removing any residual attached phosphorus under water, then coating the skin with a 'Ben Hur' solution.  Apply a sterile dressing to the wound. If swallowed, wash out the

stomach and administer active charcoal together with a 0.2% solution of copper sulphate. It may be necessary to administer a solution of common salt (2-3 tablespoons in 50 ml water). Not applicable to small children. Induce vomiting only if the victim is fully conscious. Keep under medical observation for at least 48 hours. Further information : Take the victim into the fresh air. Seek medical advice immediately. Baths of lukewarm water in readiness.

Fire-fighting measures

Extinguishing media : Water spray jet, sand.

Unsuitable exting. media : Gaseous extinguishing media, powerful water jet.

Special exposure hazards : Spontaneously flammable in air. Gives off dangerous fumes in a fire.

Dangerous decomposition products: Phosphorus Oxides (e.g. phosphorus pentoxide).

Equipment for firefighters : In case of fire, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus and protective clothing

Specific extinguishing procedure : Combustion residues must be disposed of in accordance with the applicable regulations

Accidental release measures

Personal precaution : Avoid contact with respiratory system, eyes and skin. Use personal protection.

Environmental precaution : Avoid release into the soil or the aquatic environment.

Methods for cleaning up : Take up with absorbent material (e.g. sand). Keep moist, use 10% copper sulphate solution to convert to harmless copper phosphide and transport to landfill. Neutralise with soda or slaked lime. Take up mechanically with alkali-resistant equipment. Rinse away residues with

soda solution and plenty of water. Oxidise large quantities with chlorine bleaching lye. Transport to waste disposal facility in tightly closed drums.

Handling and storage

Handling : Instructions for safe handling: handle under protective gas (nitrogen, carbon dioxide, inert gas) or water. Store and transport in tightly closed drums under a layer of water. Avoid aerosol formation. Instructions for protection against fire and explosion: keep well away from sources of

ignition/do not smoke. Keep fire extinguishing equipment in readiness when opening the drum. Always handle in moist condition under water

or under protective gas (nitrogen, carbon dioxide, inert gas). Cover extinguished fire sources with 10% copper sulphate solution or soda

solution. It may be necessary to add surfactants to the solution.

Storage : Storage stability: storage time > 12 months.

Requirements for packaging : Use steel drums. Keep container hermetically sealed. Ensure that air/oxygen cannot enter
