Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

2-Ethylhexyl acrylate is acutely toxic to freshwater algae.
EC50 (72 h, growth rate) = 1.71 mg/L (measured) (Desmodesmus subspicatus, OECD TG 201)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
1.71 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
0.45 mg/L

Additional information

In a 72-hour static test conducted according to EEC Directive 92/69/EEC and OECD Guideline 201 the acute toxicity of 2-ethylhexyl acrylate to the green algae Desmodesmus subspicatus was examined (BASF 2002). The test was performed in a closed system in the nominal concentration range between 3.13 and 100 mg/L. Growth inhibition of the algae was measured as chlorophyll-a fluorescence. Effect data were related to the measured concentrations considering the median recovery rate of 7.2 %, calculated as the average over all measurements. The test was performed with an aqueous extract of the test substance. EC50 (growth rate) = 1.71 mg/L; NOEC (growth rate) = 0.45 mg/L.

The other available tests were conducted without analytical monitoring and in open test systems. The volatility of 2 -EHA was not taken into consideration. Thus, these tests are not regarded valid for hazard assessment purposes.

In addition, a robust data set of acute studies is available from the other members of the acrylic ester category (methyl, ethyl, n-butyl, isobutyl, and tert-butyl acrylate).
