Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex VIII, the hydrolysis study (required in section 9.2.2.1) does not need to be conducted as the substance is readily biodegradable. Ethylbenzene is readily biodegradable. Thus, derogation applies to hydrolysis testing.

Rate constant (for indirect photolysis) of ethyl benzene in air was 7.1 x 10-12cm³/(molecule*sec) with a corresponding degradation half life in air (50% degradation for indirect photolysis) of 2.3 day(s). The sensitiser for indirect photolysis was OH and the sensitiser concentration was 5 x 105molecule/cm³.

There were two supporting studies with measured values for indirect photolysis of ethylbenzene in air. These kinetics studies of the reaction of OH with ethylbenzene reporte similar rate constant (for indirect photolysis) of 6.8 x 10-12and 8.2 x 10-12cm³/(molecule*sec) and with reported degradation half lives in air (50% degradation for indirect photolysis) of 2.4 and 2 day(s) respectively.

There was also one report for a calculated half life for indirect photolysis of ethyl benzene in air where the sensitiser (OH) concentration was 5 x 105molecule/cm³ for a 24 hr period. The rate constant (for indirect photolysis) was 5.9463 x 10-12with degradation half life in air (50% degradation for indirect photolysis) of 2.7 day(s).
