Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
particle size distribution (granulometry)
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:

Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
equivalent or similar to guideline
Guideline:
ISO 13320 (Particle size analysis - Laser diffraction methods)
Version / remarks:
The particle size was analyzed by the Malvern MasterSizer LASER diffracter. This instrument is an ensemble analyzer that calculates a volume distribution from the LASER diffraction pattern of a cloud of particles. This raw scatter data is then processed using a complex algorithm and presented on the basis of an equivalent spherical diameter. This instrumentation is approved by ECHA Guidance, 2008 (Chapter R.7a, pg. 148)

No specific standard deviation were identified for the particle distribution data although significant robust data was presented in the laboratory report.

The B.E.T. Surface Area of the test substance sample was determined to be 0.21 m^2/g.

Description of key information

The sample evaluated for granulometry testing was the most commercially and market representative size, was characterized by laser diffraction and found to have Mean  D10, D50, and D90 = 1.86, 4.31, and 9.74 µm, respectively. The specific surface area of the test substance sample (as determined by B.E.T.) was found to be 0.21 m2/g.

Additional information

Other grade sizes produced were reported as follows:

Typical tungsten carbide grade particle size (FSSS) = 0.5 - < 50 µm;

Ultrafine tungsten carbide grade particle size (FSSS) = 0.49 - 0.64 µm, mean diameter (SEM) = 0.18 - 0.30 µm
