Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Fatty acids, C16-18, zinc salts:

As no data for toxicity of fatty acids, C16-18, zinc salts on freshwater plants other than algae is available, a read-across to insoluble/slightly soluble zinc substances is made. It is assumed that upon dissolution fatty acids, C16-18, zinc salts are changed in part to ionic zinc and that only ionic zinc is determining biological activities. The ecotoxic potential of the fatty acid chain is assumed to be negligible. Fatty acids are generally not considered to represent a risk to the environment, which is reflected in their exclusion from REACH registration requirements (c.f. REACH Annex V (Regulation (EC) No 987/2008)). Key data (NOEC values) considered in the Chemical Safety Assessment of "Zinc" are:

The EU risk assessment on zinc (ECB 2008) used one chronic NOEC on Cladophora glomerata in the PNEC database (chronic NOEC for this multicellular algae species: 0.06 mg Zn/L). Additional information on long term experiments on 4 higher aquatic plant species was used as supportive evidence, demonstrating the low sensitivity of this taxonomic group.

Additional supportive information on 4 higher aquatic plant species available; chronic NOEC >650µg Zn/L on all 4 species tested.

For a comprehensive overview of the toxicity of zinc, see the hazard assessment of "Zinc" within the framework of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 in Appendix 1 of the CSR and cited in excerpts below.
