Calcium is the fifth most abundant element in the human body and it is mainly deposited in bone and teeth. Calcium serves numerous biological, cellular and transmitter properties in the human body as an essential nutrient and mineral. Ubiquitous presence in the environment as various calcium compounds and presence in human diet usually as ionized soluble forms withholds the necessity for further toxicity testing and risk analysis. Absorption and excretion, as well as homeostasis (intra- and extracellular), are tightly regulated by the human body.
Short description of key information:
As elemental calcium is highly reactive in water and air, the mutagenity testing of metallic calcium is not feasible. Because calcium is an essential mineral nutrient, with recommended dietary intake of 1000 mg/d with abundant and tightly regulated presence in human body, it cannot be considered to raise a concern for genetic toxicity.
