Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Based on the test results, the 96-hour LC50 for fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) for 1,2-dichloroethane was determined to be 136 mg/L (95 % CI: 129 – 144 mg/L) based on measured concentrationsunder flow-through conditions. The no observed effect concentration (NOEC) was estimated to be 81 mg/L based on measured concentrations.

Additional information

The key study was taken as it was the best documented study, therefore it was considered as the most reliable study.

The acute toxicity of 1,2-dichloroethane to fathead minnow, Pimephales promelas, was determined in an aerated, 96-hour test. Treatments consisted of a dilution water control and the nominal concentrations of 53, 81, 185, 270 and 560 mg/L.

Based on the test results, the 96-hour LC50 for fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) for 1,2-dichloroethane was determined to be 136 mg/L (95 % CI: 129 – 144 mg/L) based on measured concentrations. The no observed effect concentration (NOEC) was estimated to be 81 mg/L based on measured concentrations.

Further on, the following additional information on acute toxicity to fish is available (see table below).

Most of the remaining available studies are static or semi-static studies and most of them are conducted without analysis of the test concentrations. These tests are not considered for the assessment due to the high volatility of 1,2-dichloroethane. In this experiment the material showed a minimum 96 h LC50 of 66 mg/L in a static test with Micropterus salmoides with analytical monitoring (but significant, variable and to high vehicle concentrations) and a maximum 96 h LC50 of 430 mg/l in a closed static test with Lepomis macrochirus (Rinehart, W.E. 1971; Buccafusco et al. 1981).
