Description of key information

The aquatic toxicity of sulphur trioxide is addressed/to be addressed by read-across from sulphuric acid. Read-across from sulphuric acid is justified based on the rapid reaction of sulphur trioxide with water to form sulphuric acid.

Adequate published studies are available to address the short-term and long-term toxicity of sulphuric acid to fish; studies are also summarised in the OECD SIDS (2001).

A short-term toxicity study has been conducted with Daphnia, an adequate published study is available to address the long-term toxicity of sulphuric acid to aquatic invertebrates.

An algal inhibition study has been conducted. Inadequate information is available to address the toxicity of sulphuric acid to microorganisms: a testing proposal is therefore included for this endpoint.
