Administrative data
First-aid measures
Inhalation
Ensure access to fresh air if chlorine dioxide is inhaled. Provide the injured party with oxygen in the event of severe breathing difficulties and seek immediate hospital treatment.
Skin contact
Wash off immediately with soap and plenty of water. Seek medical advice if irritation develops. Remove and wash contaminated clothing before re-use.
Eye contact
Rinse immediately with plenty of water, also under the eyelids, for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention.
Ingestion
Rinse out mouth and immediately drink a few glasses of water but only if the person is fully conscious. Do not induce vomiting! Seek medical attention.
Fire-fighting measures
Extinguishing media
Water is recommended since chlorine dioxide is soluble in water and the toxic effects are reduced on dilution.

Special protective equipment
In the event of fire, wear self-contained breathing apparatus. When risk of direct contact, use chemical resistant protective clothing.
Accidental release measures
Environmental cleanup procedures
Contain the spill with sand, clay or earth and dilute with large amounts of water before disposal. Contact expert assistance in the event of major releases. Do not return product to container or tank due to risk of decomposition. Inform the local emergency services. Do not allow material to contaminate ground water system.

Handling and storage
Handling
Avoid inhalation and skin contact. Ensure necessary ventilation in work areas in which chlorine dioxide solution is being used. Use local exhaust ventilation at point of vapour emissions. Ensure that gas masks/gas filters are available. Ensure that emergency shower facilities are available. Avoid contact with the following chemicals and materials: iron, copper and their alloys, reducing agents.
Storage
Chlorine dioxide should be stored at the lowest possible temperature in ventilated tanks equipped with an explosion hatch. High temperatures will have a negative effect on the quality and the function of the product. Increased temperature may cause gas vaporization and may lead to decomposition. Chlorine dioxide solution should be stored separate from organic material and reducing agents.
