Description of key information

The solubility of TFE in water was determined experimentally to be 110mg/l at 28°C.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Water solubility:
110 mg/L
at the temperature of:
28 °C

Additional information

The solubility of TFE in water was determined experimentally to be 110mg/l at 28°C by Oriani (2001).

Veretennikof et al (1984) quoted the following water solubility data for TFE (assumed to be at 1atm partial pressure):

Solubility

(mg/l) at 20°C

 Solubility

(mg/l) at 40°C

 100

Water solubilities of 159 mg/l (at 25°C) and 177 mg/l (at 20°C) have also been given by Horvath 1982. These results appear to have been taken from Volokhononovich et al (1966) see below.

The solubility of TFE in water has been reviewed by Clever et al (2005). The Oriani (2001) and Veretennikov (1984) studies were not mentioned. Since none of the papers reported the solubility at a partial pressure of 1 atmosphere, the reviewers extrapolated the results to this partial pressure assuming ideal behaviour and Henry's law. The mole fractions have been converted to mg/kg in the table below:

3. Sokolov and Konshin (1990)

Clever et al (2005) assess the  Volokhonovich et al (1966) results as being "tentative" and the Zhang et al (1986) and Sokolov and Konshin (1990) values as being "doubtful". Nevertheless, the agreement between all 5 known studies on TFE solubility is sufficient for the purposes of an environmental assessment.

Given that the test in the current work by Oriani was conducted at 28°C, the solubility figure of 110mg/l TFE in water appears to be in agreement with these other data and is used for the purposes of environmental assessment.
