Materials and methods

Study type:
other: suicide by asphyxiation
Endpoint addressed:
acute toxicity: inhalation
Principles of method if other than guideline:
Case report of a suicide by propane asphyxiation.

Test material

Constituent 1
Chemical structure
Reference substance name:
Propane
EC Number:
200-827-9
EC Name:
Propane
Cas Number:
74-98-6
Molecular formula:
C3H8
IUPAC Name:
propane
Details on test material:
- Name of test material (as cited in study report): propane
- The subject used "utility gas" from the domestic cooking stove

Method

Type of population:
other: intentional exposure to utility gas
Subjects:
- Number of subjects exposed: 1
- Sex: male
- Age: 81
- Race: white
- Other: a history of suicidal tendencies.
Route of exposure:
inhalation
Reason of exposure:
intentional
Exposure assessment:
not specified
Details on exposure:
The decedent was found dead beside the stove; his head covered with a plastic bag and the stove gas was turned on.
Examinations:
- Other: An autopsy was performed. Blood and urine were submitted for toxicological analysis.

Results and discussion

Results of examinations:
The lungs showed some emphysematous bullae and the tracheobronchial tree showed some greyish-pink, mucoid material. The tracheobronchial lymph nodes were enlarged and calcified.
Outcome of incidence:
Suicide case; death was due to hypoxemia secondary to propane inhalation.

Any other information on results incl. tables

The retention times of the autopsy sample peaks matched those of the references and the "utility gas". Carbon monoxide and other volatile gases were not detected.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
Death was due to hypoxemia secondary to propane inhalation.
Executive summary:

In this suicide case, death was due to hypoxemia secondary to propane inhalation.
