Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

other: GLP guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
Version / remarks:
EEC Directive 92/69 Appendix V part A10
Deviations:
yes
Remarks:
Instead a direct flame as proposed in the guideline, the ignition source was a platinum wire heated by electrical power (current 30A, about 1000°C)

yes

The test item didn't burn. It melts in contact of the ignition source. No further testing was required.

Adipic Acid is not "highly flammable" under the conditions of the test.

Interpretation of results:
non flammable
Remarks:
Migrated information
Executive summary:

The determination of the flammability of adipic acid was performed in accordance with EEC Directive 92/69 Appendix V part A10. Under test conditions, adipic Acid is not "highly flammable" (Rhodia, 2008).

Description of key information

The determination of the flammability of adipic acid was performed in accordance with EEC Directive 92/69 Appendix V part A10. Under test conditions, adipic Acid is not "highly flammable" (Rhodia, 2008). In accordance with section 1 of REACH Annex XI, testing for pyrophoric properties and flammability on contact with water is not necessary due to the absence of structural alerts and the existing experience with handling and use of the test substance (Currenta, 2009).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
non flammable

Additional information

Concerning pyrophoric properties and flammability in contact with water, it is concluded, that based on knowledge of scientific experts the statements given for the mixture of dicarboxylic acids, C4 -C6 (CAS-No 68603 -87 -2) can be used for adipic acid, as it is a constituent of the mixture. Results from adipic acid are taken into account, as the substance is regarded as a good representative of the acids, due to structural relationship and based on similarity to physico-chemical properties of the other constituents.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The substance has not to be classified concerning flammable solids, pyrophoric properties and flammability in contact with water.

In respect to the flammability, the substance melts in contact of the ignition source and didn't burn in the experiment conducted

in accordance with EEC Directive 92/69 Appendix V part A10. No further testing was required (Rhodia, 2008).

Concerning pyrophoric properties, the substance has no pyrophoric properties. Based on knowledge of scientific experts, experience in production or handling shows that the substance does not ignite spontaneously on coming into contact with air at normal temperatures, i.e. the substance is known to be stable at room temperature for prolognged periods of time (Currenta, 2009).

Regarding flammability in contact with water, the substance does not emit flammable gases in contact with water as the mixture does not contain metals or metalloids (Currenta, 2009).
