Additional information

1,4 -Butanediol has been adequately tested for its potential to cause irritation and has been determined not to be a skin or eye irritant (Jedrychowski, et. al., 1990 ). Using the Draize method, rabbits were treated with the undiluted test substance for 24 hours under occlusive conditions. No skin reactions were found (mean 72 hr Draize score: 0). In a separate study using the Draize method for eye irritation, 1,4 -Butanediol was applied to rabbit eyes using a syringe and allowed to remain for 24 hours. Slight reddening of the conjunctives and small amounts of discharge were observed in all rabbits 1 hr after ocular application. The changes diminished after 24 and 48 hrs. No abnormalities were observed thereafter (mean 72 hr Draize score: 0).

Justification for classification or non-classification

Skin irritation

Based on the results of the key study (Draize score = 0 at 72 hours under occlusive conditions), 1,4-butanediol would not be rated a primary dermal irritant under the EU CLP criteria (EU Regulation 1272/2008).

Eye irritation

Based on the results of the key study (Draize score of 0 at 72 hours), 1,4-butanediol would not be classified as eye irritant under the EU CLP criteria (EU Regulation 1272/2008).
