Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Phenol is relative quickly photodegraded in air by reaction with OH radicals. Half-lives of 14 h based on the experimentally determined reaction rate constant and 11 h based on the calculated reaction rate constant were calculated.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Half-life in air:
14 h

Additional information

Based on the experimental reaction rate constant k(OH)=28.3 x 10E-12 cm3/molecule x s at room temperature and assuming an OH radical concentration of 5 x 10E4 radicals/cm³ a half-life t1/2=14 h was calculated. The calculated k(OH)-rate constant of phenol at room temperature (Atkinson-Method) is reported to be k(OH)=36 x 10E-12 cm3/molecule x s. The calculation yields a half-life t1/2=11 h.
