General Information

Name:
Black liquor
Implementation:
EU
Remarks:
Black liquor is classified as corrosive to skin (Skin Corr. 1B) and causing serious eye damage (Eye damage 1) based on newly conducted GLP OECD guideline compliant studies and the estimated maximal concentration of the typical component sodium hydroxide and some other identified components like sodium sulphide, formic acid and acetic acid that carry a harmonized classification for skin corrosion. Acute oral toxicity was studied by a newly conducted GLP OECD guideline compliant study and was discovered negative (LD50 > 5000 mg/kg). The concentrations of the identified components in Black liquor do not suggest an acute toxicity classification of the substance either. Only part of the physico-chemical parameters that derive classification has been newly tested for Black liquor. The results indicate that Black liquor has no explosive, flammable or pyrophoric properties nor contains self-reactive or self-heating substances. The waivers of the non-tested properties are presented with the comparative end-point summaries. The classification of Black liquor as possibly corrosive to metals and for liberation of toxic gases (e.g. hydrogen sulphide) in contact with acids is based on the known properties and practical experience of Black liquor.
