Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

Black liquor is the spent cooking liquor from alkaline pulping and bleaching processes. The source materials for Black liquor are softwood, hardwood, agricultural fibres and White liquor. Dry substance content of Black liquor varies from 3 to 80% consisting of ca. 30 -77% of inorganics and 23-70% organics.

Black liquor is a UVCB substance having variable composition. Therefore the physical and chemical properties are also somewhat variable.

The physical and chemical properties (Annex VII, REACH regulation) of a representative Black liquor sample were tested by the Seibersdorf Labor GLP laboratory during 2009 -2010 (the Key studies). The endpoints for which additional data was available in the literature were density, vapour pressure and surface tension. For the other endpoints no data was found through extensive literature searches.

Additionally the practical experience from the manufacturers and the testing laboratory was utilized in estimation of the physicochemical properties of Black liquor.

Justifications for data waiving are given for the endpoints:

- Particle size distribution (granulometry),

- Water solubility,

- Surface tension,

- Flash point,

- Auto flammability,

- Oxidising properties.

According to the experimental results and practical experience the physicochemical properties Black liquor were:

- Not highly explosive,

- Not flammable,

- Not pyrophoric,

- Not self-heating,

- Not oxidising.

The proposed classification derived from the physical and chemical properties of Black liquor is:

Corrosive to metals, category 1
