PBT assessment: overall result

Reference
Name:
maleic anhydride
Type of composition:
boundary composition of the substance
State / form:
solid: bulk
Reference substance:
maleic anhydride
PBT status:
the substance is not PBT / vPvB
Justification:

Maleic anhydride is readily biodegradable, thus the substance is not persistent (not P) and not very persistent (not vP) in the environment.

Based on a very low partioning coefficient (log Pow = –2.6) the substance is not bioaccumulative (not B) and not very bioaccumulative (not vB).

Due to the results of the aquatic toxicity studies (see chapter 7.1. Aquatic compartment including sediment) and the relevant mammalian toxicity studies (see chapter 5. Human Health Hazard Assessment), the substance is toxic (T).

Regarding all available data on biotic and abiotic degradation, bioaccumulation and toxicity it can be stated that the substance does not fulfil the PBT criteria (not PBT) and not the vPvB criteria (not vPvB).
