Biodegradation
Biodegradation in water: screening test
The biodegradability of the test substance 2 -Propenoic acid, C12 -14 alkyl esters was assessed according to OECD guideline 301B (1992) and EU-method C.4-C (2008). The degree of biodegradation of the test substance was 80-90 %CO2/ThCO2 after an exposure period of 28 days. The test substance 2 -Propenoic acid, C12 -14 alkyl esters is readily biodegradable under the conditions of this test.
Biodegradation in water and sediment and soil.
In accordance with column 2 of REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, Annex XI, section 9.2.1.2, 9.2.1.3 and section 9.2.1.4 no study on biodegradation in water, sediment and soil needs to be conducted if the test substance is biodegradable under test conditions. The long-chain alkylsters (C12 - C14) are all readily biodegradable under test conditions. Thus no futher biodegradation testing in water and sediment and soil is required.
Bioaccumulation
The bioaccumulation potential of the test substance Dodecyl acrylate was calculated to be 217.4 L/kg wet-wt or log BCF = 2.337 using the EPA Epiwin (v.4.11) software. Furthermore, direct and indirect exposure of the test item to water and soil is highly unlikely.
Adsorption/Desorption
The adsorption coefficient of teh test substance Dodecyl acrylate was estimated using KOCWIN v2.00 embedded in EPI Suite v4.10 of EPA’s Office of Pollution Prevention Toxics and Syracuse Research Corporation (SRC). The program is a screening level tool and estimates the log Koc adsorption coefficient using a Molecular Connectivity Index (MCI). Dodecyl acrylate has a molecular weight of 240.39 g/mol and therefore fits the applicability domain of this model. A log Koc of 3.6338 was derived for the test item.
Hydrolysis
In accordance with column 2 of REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, section 9.2.2.1, a study on hydrolysis does not need to be conducted as all long-chain alkyl esters (C12 - C14) are readily biodegradable. Further the water solubility of the long-chain alkyl esters is very low (< 1 µg/L at 20 °C)
