Description of key information

LAS was evaluated for its biodegradability in water, and was found to be 85% degraded in 29 days; LAS is readily biodegradable in water. Although not a requirement for surfactants, LAS passed the 10-day window. Biodegradation of LAS in sediments has been reported. C12LAS (linear alkylbenzene sulfonate) was aerobically biodegraded in sediment (Lytle Creek). After 148 days, 60.8% was mineralized, 14.4% was associated with solids, 1.4% was metabolites, and 24.5% remained as parent. The rate constants for primary biodegradation and mineralization were 1.5 day-1 and 0.06 day-1, respectively. C12LAS (linear alkylbenzene sulfonate) was aerobically biodegraded in sediment (Ohio River). After 92 days, 42.1% was mineralized, 28.5% was associated with solids, 0% was metabolites, and 29.8% remained as parent. The disappearance of LAS from sludge-amended soils was reported as having a Half-life = between 7 and 22 days. Half-lives compare well with those for ultimate degradation in lab soil tests (with14-C evolution), indicating that the degradation of LAS does not lead to the formation of significant levels of breakdown intermediates in soil.

Biodegradation is the primary means of degradation for LAS. LAS is considered readily biodegradable in water, sediment and soil.
