Anhydrous aluminium chloride is classified as corrosive (C, R34) according to Annex I to the Directive 67/548/EEC, and H314 (Skin corr. 1B) according to Annex VI of Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008. This classification was confirmed in a Corrositex® Biobarrier Membrane test (OECD 435) (BASF SE, 2015).
The substance is hydrolytically instable (see also section 4.8 of the IUCLID). It reacts violently with water under formation of hydrogen chloride. Anhydrous aluminium chloride can be anticipated to be corrosive to the skin, and therefore, testing for skin sensitisation was omitted.Limited information is available by Magnusson and Kligman, 1966 (cited as supporting study) indicating no skin sensitisation potential of anhydrous aluminium chloride; however, this information is only available via secondary sources and does not provide sufficient data to properly cover the endpoint of skin sensitisation.
