Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

As an OECD 301 F test demonstrated that the substance was >60% degraded in 28 days and the 10-day window was met, the substance is considered to be readily biodegradable.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Biodegradation in water:
readily biodegradable

Additional information

An OECD 301 F manometric respirometry test was conducted to assess the ready biodegradability of DMATO. A measured volume of mineral medium, containing 100 mg test substance/L giving at least 50 - 100 mg Theoretical Oxygen Demand (ThOD/L), as the nominal sole source of organic carbon, was inoculated with activated sludge and stirred in a closed flask at a constant temperature for 28 days. Test vessels and blanks were set up in duplicate.A control for the activity of the inoculum and a vessel to assess the inhibitory effects of the substance on activated sludge were also included.

The oxygen consumption was determined based on the change in pressure in the apparatus. Measurements were made using a closed respirometer. Evolved carbon dioxide was absorbed in a solution of potassium hydroxide.

On day 28 the substance was 67% degraded in test vessel 1 and 71% degraded in test vessel 2. The mean degradation at day 28 was 69%. As the observed degradation was greater than 60% and the pass value was reached within the 10-day window, the substance is considered to be readily biodegradable.

As all validity criteria were met, the test is considered to be valid.
