- No significant excess was observed for all causes of mortality or for mortality from any of five broad categories of cause or from four specific types of cancer. This was true for the entire cohort as well as for a subgroup that had been heavily exposed to nitrates.

A total of 1327 male workers engaged in the production of nitrate based fertilizers between 1946 and 1981 were tracked until 1981. In addition, a subgroup consisting of workers heavily exposed to nitrate, defined as working in an environment likely to contain more than 10 mg NO3/m3for a year or longer, was separately analyzed.
