Description of key information

In fresh water, the 96-h EC50 is 19000 mg/l in Pseudokirchnerella subcapitata (reported as Selenastrum capricornutum). In marine water, the 96-h EC50 is 19100 mg/l in Skeletonema costatum.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
19 000 mg/L
EC50 for marine water algae:
19 100 mg/L

Additional information

Experimental data are available with fresh water and marine algae. In fresh water, the 96-h EC50 is 19,000 mg/l in Pseudokirchnerella subcapitata (reported as Selenastrum capricornutum) and the 14-d NOEC is 15,000 mg/l (ARCO Chemical Company, 1990). In marine water, the 96-h EC50 is 19,100 mg/l in Skeletonema costatum and the 14 -d NOEC is <5300 mg/l (ARCO Chemical Company, 1990). The 14-day NOEC values cannot be used, since a NOEC should be a minimum value and the algae are not in the exponential growth phase anymore after 96 hours.
