Description of key information

The information on the physical and chemical properties were from experimental results with test sample provided by Lead Registrant Kemira or either cited from peer-reviewed database or handbooks. These studies followed standard guidelines for methodology and so the data is considered reliable and suitable for use. Expert judgement based waiving are applied for the endpoints on which tests are not necessary.

 

Aluminium chloride basic, always manufactured as aqueous solution for stability of composition purpose, is a dense, clear yellow liquid with very low freezing point. Negligible vapour pressure is anticipated for the pure substance. It is miscible in water, without surface-active properties, and undergoes complex pH-dependent speciation.

It is not classified for physical hazards, based on CLP criteria, except that solutions are corrosive to metals.

Water solubility  Aqueous solution as manufactured is totally miscible; however aluminium speciation rapidly leads to salting out to various degrees which are water quality-, and expecially highly pH-dependent. Solubility of monomeric Al can descend as low as 12 µg Al/L.

 Flammability

 No FP observed up to boiling ca 110°C.

No Auto-Ignition Temperature observed up to 650°C.

No pyrophoric properties expected, or release of flammable gas if contact with water (based on experience).

Self-heating unlikely for liquids (method not applicable).

 Explosive / Self-Reactive properties  No explosive or self-reactive properties anticipated (based on chemical structure).

 Oxidising properties

 No oxidising properties anticipated (based on chemical structure). Not a peroxide.
 Dissociation constant  Not required (dissociate into ions and forms various hydroxides and polymeric species, depending on pH).
 Metal corrosivity  100% mass loss on aluminium within 2 days

Numerical values above are given for a typical 35.7%w/w solution, containing 8.7% Al, and with a basicity ratio of ca Cl 1.2 / OH 1.8.
