Description of key information

Fatty acids, C18-unsaturated, dimers (CAS No. 61788-89-4) is expected to show no effects up to the limit of the water solubility (<0.12 mg/L).

Two studies investigating the short-term toxicity of Fatty acids, C18-unsaturated, dimers (CAS No. 61788-89-4) to freshwater fish are available. An OECD 203 guideline study was conducted under static test conditions with Danio rerio (Benjits, 2002). The LC50 (96h) was determined as > 350 mg/L (nominal). No details on the preparation of test solutions were provided. In a second study with Cyprinus carpio conducted in accordance to a German standard test for the evalulation of water-polluting substances (Bewertung wassergefährdender Stoffe, Bestimmung der akuten Fischtoxizität), which is comparable to DIN 38412 L15, a LC50 (48h) > 1000 mg/L was observed (Bogers,1988). The test concentration of 1000 mg/L was described as a non homogenous suspension with clear visibility of undissolved test substance, which confirms the high insolubility of CAS No. 61788-89-4. After 48 hours one out of ten fish died.

Thus, the LC50 freshwater is determined to be greater than the water solubility of Fatty acids, C18-unsaturated, dimers (< 0.12 mg/L).

These test results are in accordance with the results listed in a secondary literature source (EPA 2009) for the “Fatty Acid Dimers and Trimers Category”. No effects up to the limit of water solubility for Fatty acids, C18-unsaturated, dimers (CAS No. 61788-89-4) were observed in a test with Pimephales promelas. This test was conducted with WAFs under static conditions over 96 hours.
