Description of key information

Waiving of study:
In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex IX, a Bioaccumulation test in aquatic species (required in section 9.3.2) does not need to be conducted as chlorine has a low potential for bioaccumulation (calculated log Kow = -0.85).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Chlorine does not bioaccumulate or bioconcentrate, because of its water solubility and high reactivity.

The concentration of hypochlorite in the environment, is modelled by Vandepitte and Schowanek and is estimated to drop down to “zero” within the first minutes after release in the sewer.
