Additional information

To assess the applicability of slags as agricultural fertilizers, the scientific work of 9 German Agricultural Research Stations was reviewed. These stations applied BOS as a fertilizer for at least 11 and up to 88 years. On a hectare (ha) basis, 24 - 118 kg Cr/ha were applied in the form of BOS. The theoretical, calculated increase of the soil Cr(total) concentrations from 15 - 66 mg/kg soil in controls was 9 to 20 mg Cr/kg soil. The measured increase was less, typically 2/3 of this value. Even though soil became slightly enriched in Cr, no bioaccumulation occurred in plants. In comparison to fields without fertilization by slags, there was no difference in the Cr contents in plants from either of these sites, suggesting that Cr is not bioaccumulated by agricultural crop (Rex 2003).
