Description of key information

In accordance with section 1 of REACH Annex XI, the study does not need to be conducted as the uptake of sodium, via exposure to sodium bicarbonate, is much less than the uptake of sodium via food. Therefore, sodium bicarbonate is not expected to be systemically available in the body. Furthermore, it should be realised that an oral uptake of sodium bicarbonate will result in a neutralisation in the stomach due to the gastric acid. Sodium bicarbonate is an important extracellular buffer in vertebrates and is therefore readily regulated in the body.

A reliable study is available exposing Hy-line brown hens for up to 50 weeks to a diet supplemented with 3 g/kg of NaHCO3. The study was conducted following the Guidelines for Experimental Animal Research of the Ministry of Science and Technology, P. R. China. Results showed no adverse effect on feed consumption and efficiency and eggs masses compared with the control, determining a NOEC of 3 g/kg diet. After 50 weeks, 75 weeks hens showed a significant lower eggshell thickness and strength compared with the control, determining a LOEC of 3g/Kg diet. In contrast, eggs production was stimulated significantly with exposure to the test item.
