Description of key information
The 60-d BCF value in Japanese carp is 58.3 L/kg
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- BCF (aquatic species):
- 58.3 L/kg ww
Additional information
One GLP-compliant study was available and was performed in accordance with OECD Guideline 305. Whole-body steady state bioconcentration factors (BCF) ranged from 49.4 to 297 L/kg for Japanese carp (Cyprinus carpio) exposed to 0.5 µg/L of delta-damascone and from 31.3 to 310 L/kg at a concentration of 5 µg/L of delta-damascone in a flow-through system at 25 ºC (Kurume Laboratory, 2007b).
Each concentration of the test item was maintained at more than 88 % of each nominated concentration. The variation of the concentrations of the test item was within ± 20 % of the average of the measured concentrations. Steady-state was reached after 41 days. BCFs were calculated on the basis of these results. Normalisation of the value for lipid content was not needed as the lipid content was close to 5%.
The BCF values indicate a low potential for bioconcentration.
In thereport three main components and one minor component have been tested for their bioaccumulation potential at two levels 5 and 0.5µg/L(total delta-damascone). Each component has been analysed in the water phase and in the fish. Level 2values are not always reported because the values were below the limit of detection. Using the fraction of components (fC) of delta-damascone and their respectivevalues (using the highest of the two levels) the followingis proposed:
0.017(fC1) x 81() + 0.92(fC2) x 56() + 0.043(fC3 x 31() + 0.013(fC4) x 310() = 58.3
fC1 = peak 1 = Trans, cis-isomer 1.7%
fC2 = peak 2 = Trans, trans-isomer 92.0 %
fC3 = peak 3 = Cis, trans-isomer 4.3%
fC4 = peak 4 = …dione 1.3%
The BCF value of 58.3 L/kg is used in the assessment.
