Description of key information

OECD Guideline 209_Activated sludge with addition of synthetic sewage: EC50 (3 h) = 660 mg/L.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for microorganisms:
660 mg/L

Additional information

A study was performed to assess the effect of the test material on the respiration of activated sewage sludge. The method followed OECD Guideline 209 (1984) and EEC Commission Directive 87/302/EEC. The test material was aerated for a period of 3 hours at 21°C in the presence of activated sewage sludge with the addition of a synthetic sewage as a respiratory substrate. Based on the information from both range-finding studies, test concentrations of 32, 100, 320, 1000 and 3200 mg/L were selected for the main study. The effect of the test material on the respiration of activated sewage sludge gave a 3-hour EC50 of 660 mg/L. The reference compound (3,5-dichlorophenol) revealed an EC50 (3 hours) of 7.2 mg/L.
