Registration Dossier

Data platform availability banner - registered substances factsheets

Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

First-aid measures

Take off immediately all contaminated clothing.
If inhaled:
Keep patient calm, remove to fresh air, seek medical attention.
On skin contact:
Wash thoroughly with soap and water.
On contact with eyes:
Immediately wash affected eyes for at least 15 minutes under running water with eyelids held open,
consult an eye specialist.
On ingestion:
Immediately seek medical attention, because ammonium nitrite acts toxically after swallowing.

Fire-fighting measures

The substance is not flammable, however cannot be heated. In the case of surrounding fire, the vessels with ammonium nitrite must be intensively cooled by water spraying or, if possible removed from the fire zone. Firemen should use protection suit and air or oxygen equipment, because the substance can decompose after heating, evolving much of nitrogen (oxygenless atmosphere).

Accidental release measures

Leaks from intermediates tanks are collected in the leak well, from which the solution is recycled to the production. Leaks from pipe should be diluted with water and send or to leak well or to biological plant for waste water treatment. Avoid inhalation, because in the case of leak ammonia is present in the air (from ammonium carbonate decomposition).

Handling and storage

No storage. Intermediate tanks are isolated thermally, located outside the building, equipped with temperature control, additional stabilizer supply, water spraying and tray with leak well.

Exposure controls / personal protection

Personal protective equipment.:
respiratory protection - use gas-mask with many gases canister
eye protection - use safety glasses with side-shields (frame goggles) (e.g. EN 166)
- skin protection - the substance is not corrosive, however observe company rules for skin protection.
Handle with good industrial hygiene and safety practice. Avoid contact with skin, eyes and clothing.

Stability and reactivity

Ammonium nitrite is stable only in solution. Therefore it is used as water solution stabilized with diammonium carbonate (10 %) only.
The substance can decompose thermally (even violently), therefore the intermediates tanks are equipped with temperature control, stabilizer supply and possibility to cool.
Hazardous reaction: reacts with acidizing agents.

Disposal considerations

Any leaks should be collected and recycled. If not possible, dilute with water and send to biological waste waters treatment plant.
