Since no experimental studies investigating the short-term toxicity of 1,3-Propanediol, 2,2-dimethyl-, C5-9 carboxylates (CAS 85711-80-4) to aquatic invertebrates are available for this endpoint, in accordance to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5 a read across to the structurally related source substance 3,5,5-trimethylhexanoic acid mixed tetraesters with PE and valeric acid (CAS 131459-39-7) was conducted. This read-across is justified in detail in the overall summary (IUCLID section 6.1) and within the analogue justification in IUCLID Section 13.
The study with 3,5,5-trimethylhexanoic acid mixed tetraesters with PE and valeric acid (CAS 131459-39-7) was performed, according to OECD Guideline 202 and GLP, in a static system, using Daphnia magna as test organism (Sewell and McKenzie, 2003). Daphnia magna was exposed to water accommodated fractions (WAF) with a loading rate of 1000 mg/L (nominal) for 48 h. The measured concentration was below the limit of quantification (i.e. < 0.032 mg/L). No effects were observed. Thus, an EL50 (48 h) >1000 mg/L based on the nominal concentration of the water accommodated fraction of the test substance was reported.
Based on the available results from this structurally related read-across substance (in accordance to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5) which is characterized by a similar ecotoxicological profile and comparable structure, it can be concluded that 1,3-Propanediol, 2,2-dimethyl-, C5-9 carboxylates (CAS 85711-80-4) will not exhibit short-term effects on aquatic invertebrates up to the limit of water solubility.
