Description of key information
Short term toxicity to fish:
This study was designed to assess the toxic effects of the test compound on the Zebra Fish Danio rerio. Bowl aquaria containing 2 liters of potable water (passed through reverse osmosis system) were loaded with 8 fishes. A static procedure was used for the study and it was conducted in compliance with the OECD guideline 203. A 96 h study was conducted for CAS No.29556-33-0 on Zebra Fish Danio rerio, at a test concentrations of 100 mg/L. The fishes were moving slowly as compared to control. No mortalities were found in the control aquaria. The lethal concentrations LC50 was determine to be >100mg/L.
Long term toxicity to fish:
The test compound sodium 2-(2 3-dihydro-1 3-dioxo-1H-inden-2-yl)quinoline-6-sulphonate is predicted to have a No Effect Level Concentration of 9.657 mg/L in fish after the total exposure period of 28 days.
Short term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates:
The median effective concentration (EC50) for the test substance sodium 2-(2,3-dihydro-1,3-dioxo-1H-inden-2-yl)quinoline-6-sulphonate (Common Name: D&C Yellow 10) (84864 -68 -6) in Daphnia magna was determined to be 202.6 mg/l on the basis of mobility inhibition effects in a 48 hour study. Based on the EC50 value, indicates that the substance is likely to be non-hazardous to aquatic invertebrates and cannot be classified as per the CLP criteria.
Long term toxicity to invertebrates:
The test compound sodium 2-(2 3-dihydro-1 3-dioxo-1H-inden-2-yl)quinoline-6-sulphonate is predicted to have a No Effect Level Concentration at 5.992 mg/L in daphnids.
Toxicity to algae and cyanobacteria:
Freshwater algal growth inhibition test was carried out on Desmodesmus subspicatus with the substance Sodium 2-(2,3-dihydro-1,3-dioxo-1H- inden-2-yl) quinoline-6-sulphonate according to OECD Guideline 201. A limit test at sample concentration of 100 mg/L was performed. Effects on the growth rate of the organism were studied. The median effective concentration (EC50) for the test substance, Sodium 2-(2,3-dihydro-1,3-dioxo-1H-inden-2-yl)quinoline-6-sulphonate, in Desmodesmus subspicatus was determined to be >100 mg/L. Based on this EC50 value and after comparing with CLP criteria for aquatic classification of the substance it is concluded that the substance Sodium 2-(2,3-dihydro-1,3-dioxo-1H-inden-2-yl)quinoline-6-sulphonate does not exhibit toxicity to aquatic algae (Desmodesmus subspicatus), and not classified as per the CLP classification criteria.

Study was performed according to the OECD guideline in a static system for the total exposure period of 48 hrs. The stock solution 200 mg/l was prepared by dissolving yellow powder in reconstituted water. Test solutions of required concentration as were prepared by mixing the stock solution of the test sample with reconstituted test water. Test conducted at 0, 10, 20, 40, 80, 160 mg/l nominal concentrations. Effects on immobilisation were observed for 48 hours. With the test substance one positive control Potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7) was also run simultaneously. After the exposure of chemical, effect concentration EC50 was calculated using nonlinear regression by the software Prism 4.0.
