Description of key information
Additional information
Appearance:
On the basis of physical observation 3-Methoxyacetophenone (586-37-8) was found to be an organic pale yellow colour liquid.
Melting point/freezing point:
The Freezing point determination of test item 3-methoxyacetophenone(CAS No. 586-37-8) was done using Pale yellow colour clear liquid. No freezing was observed up to -17.9°C.Hence, the freezing point was inferred to be less than -17.9 °C at 966.9 hPa.
Boiling point :
The boiling point determination of Test item3-methoxy acetophenone(CAS No. 586-37-8) was done as per the test guideline OECD 103. The method followed was according toSiwoloboff. The mean boiling point was found to be greater than 250°C at 972.4 hPa.
Density:
The density of test item 3-methoxy acetophenone (CAS No.586-37-8) was determined following OECD guideline 109 and according to the Indian standard method for determination of density of liquids [IS 4730:1994 (Reaffirmed 2010)]. The mean density of the test item was found to be1.091 g/cm3 at 20oC and 967.1 hPa .
Particle Size Distribution:
The chemical 3-methoxyacetophenone is a liquid chemical and hence it is technically not possible to estimate the particle size; as this property is applicable only to solid chemicals.
Vapour pressure:
Vapour pressure of m-Methoxyacetophenone was estimated to be 10.665 Pa (0.08 mmHg) at 25 deg C.
Partition coefficient:
The partition Coefficient n-octanol/water of 3-methoxyacetophenone(CAS No.586-37-8) was determined by the Reverse Phase High Performance Liquid Chromatographic method according to OECD Guideline No. 117 for testing of Chemicals. The reference substances were chosen according to structural similarity with the test substance and calibration graph was prepared. The reference substances were 4 -Methoxyphenol, phenol, Acetophenone, Benzene, Benzophenone, Diphenyl ether, 2, 6- Diphenylpyridine having Pow value ranging from 1.3 to 4.9.The Log Pow value was found to be 2.085 at 25°C.
Water solubility:
Water solubility of m-Methoxyacetophenone is estimated to be 3616.3 mg/L at 25°C. this value indicates that the substance is soluble in water.
Surface Tension:
In accordance with column 2 of Annex VII of the REACH regulation, the study need only be conducted if surface activity is a desired property of the chemical. The chemical 3-methoxyacetophenone is used as a pharmaceutical chemical. For this use, surface activity is not an important property. Hence this study was considered for waiver.
Flash point :
The flash point determination of 3-methoxy acetophenone (CAS No. 586-37-8 ) was done following closed cup method using Pensky-Martens flash point apparatus. The test was conducted in replicates and mean flash point was found to be 94.3 0C at 966.9 hPa.
Auto flammability:
Test chemical did not catch fire on being exposed to air at room temperature of 27°C pressure of 966 hPa. This indicates that Test chemical is not auto-flammable.
Flammability:
Test chemical does not indicate any ignition when the flame of bunsen burner having temperature of approximately 950°C is brought in contact with it. Thus it can be concluded that Test chemical is not flammable at high temperature. However since such high temperatures are not found under normal circumstances of transportation and use, thus Test chemical was considered non-flammable.
Explosiveness:
In accordance with column 2 of Annex VII of the REACH regulation, the study does not need to be conducted since there are no chemical groups associated with explosive properties present in the molecule of 3-methoxyacetophenone. Thus, this end point was considered for waiver and the chemical is considered to be "Non explosive" for the purpose of chemical safety assessment.
Oxidising Properties:
In accordance with column 2 of Annex VII of the REACH regulation, the substance 3-methoxyacetophenone is incapable of reacting exothermically with combustible materials on the basis of the chemical structure. It is an organic substance containing oxygen but no halogen atoms and these elements are not chemically bonded to nitrogen or oxygen. Thus, the chemcial is likely to be "Non-oxidising" for the purpose of chemical safety assessment.
pH :
The pH determination of test item3-methoxy acetophenone(CAS No. 586-37-8 ) was done as per the test guideline OECD 122. The pH of the test solution was determined with the help of digitalpH meter. The mean pH was found to be 6.28 at 34 °C.
Viscosity:
The viscosity determination of Test item 3-methoxy acetophenone(CAS No. 586-37-8 ) was done as per the test guideline OECD 114 using Redwood Viscometer No. 1.Kinematic viscosity (experimental) of Test item at 200C and 400C is 20.85mm2/secand22.74mm2/s, respectively. Dynamic viscosity (calculated) of Test item at 200C and 400C is17.42 mPa.Sand 19.00mPa.S, respectively.
