Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

Estimation based on Ideal Gas Law, as: Density = PM/(RT).

It is possible (though complex) to calculate minimum and maximum weighted averages of the density of the full gas mix, taking into account its variable composition. However, these values would be useless in practice: upon release, the individual gaseous constituents would behave according to their individual densities.

Instead, calculated below are the densities of the 3 main constituents (this gives a wider range than the min-max density of the actual gas mix registered):

  • Nitrogen and Carbon monoxide: M=28.01 g/mol so Density at 1 atm and 20°C is 1.164 kg/m3 and relative to air this is 0.983.
  • Hydrogen: M=2.02 g/mol, so Density at 1 atm and 20°C is 0.084 kg/m3 and relative to air this is 0.071.

All 3 key constituents are lighter than air.
