Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The test item has no explosive properties in the sense of the European Commission Regulation (EC) No. 44012008, Method A.14 and in the sense of the EPA Product Properties Test Guideline OCSPP 830.6316.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Explosiveness:
non explosive

Additional information

A study was performed according to EU method A.14 to investigate possible explosive properties of the test item. Different tests were performed to identify the thermal stability and the explosive properties due to friction, shock and thermal sensitivity.

As a screening method for the determination of explosive properties a differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) under nitrogen was performed which resulted in an exothermal effect in the temperature range of 175 -260 °C with an energy of 583 J/g. The heat of decomposition was above 500 J/g and therefore the main test was performed.

Mechanical sensitivity (friction):

No explosion occurred within 6 tests using a pin load of 360 N, only a discoloration of the test item was observed.

Mechanical Sensitivity (shock):

No explosion within 6 tests using a mass of 10 kg falling from a height 0.4 m was observed.

Thermal sensitivity:

The test on thermal sensitivity carried out with a nozzle with a diameter of 2.0 mm showed no explosion. Compared to the nozzle with a diameter of 6.0 mm the venting area of the nozzle with 2.0 mm is smaller by an order of magnitude. Additionally the physical state of the test item excludes the enrichment of high-energy components caused by evaporation of volatile solvents. Due to these facts an explosion with a nozzle width of 6.0 mm was excluded.

Final Result:

The test item has no explosive properties in the sense of the European Commission Regulation (EC) No. 440/2008, Method A.14.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The test item has no explosive properties in the sense of the European Commission Regulation (EC) No. 44012008, Method A.14. and in the sense of the EPA Product Properties Test Guideline OCSPP 830.6316. Thus, no classification is warranted.
