Description of key information

In 72 h the effective concentration of n-Butylamine, the hydrolysis product of n-butyl isocyanate, which reduces the growth rate of aquatic algae by 50 %, is 51.1 mg/l (Currenta, 2010).

Butyl isocyanate was shown to completely hydrolyze during the solution step, which took 6 minutes yielding n-butyl amine and 1,3-dibutyl urea as transformation products (Bayer Industry Services, 2005). Compared to the applied concentration of butyl isocyanate, 92 % n-butyl amine and only 8 % of 1,3-dibutyl urea were formed. Thus, n-butyl amine represents the main transformation product. Since the duration of the bio assay is quite greater than the dissipation time of butyl isocyanate, results obtained through the testing of n-butyl amine can be used to assess the risk of butyl isocyanate towards aquatic organisms. Effects of 1,3-dibutyl urea can be neglected due to the low concentration formed
