The assessment is based on the data currently available. New studies, based on the category review and the final decisions issued for some of the category substances, which are also relevant for this assessment, are currently being conducted. The hazard assessment with respect to aquatic toxicity will be updated once all ongoing studies have been finalised.
The alkyl ether sulfates grouped within the AES category show similar structural, physico-chemical, environmental and toxicological properties. The approach of grouping different AES for the evaluation of their effects on human health and the environment was also made by the Danish EPA [1] and HERA [2], supporting the read across approach between structurally related AES. A detailed justification for the category approach and read-across is provided in the technical dossier (see IUCLID Section 13).
According to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, general endpoint requirements for a registration in the tonnage band 10 - 100 (Annex VIII) include data on the short-term aquatic toxicity to organisms of three trophic levels (fish, aquatic invertebrates and algae) and data on the toxicity to aquatic microorganisms. Tests with fish, algae and aquatic microorganisms are available to examine the aquatic toxicity of AES (C16 -18 and C18-unsaturated, 1-2.5 EO) Na (CAS 157627-95-7). To describe the acute toxicity to fish a weight of evidence approach with an additional read across study to AES (C12 -14, 1-2.5 EO) Na (CAS 68891-38-3) was chosen. The acute aquatic toxicity to invertebrates (Daphnids) was examined based on read across data from AES (C16-18, 1EO) Na (CAS 68585-40-0).
The acute toxicity of fish, Daphnia and algae are in the same range (>1 mg/L < 10 mg/L), with the lowest effect value for Daphnia magna (EC50-48h = 1.4 mg/L a.i.). The algae ErC10 of 0.606 mg/L a.i. was used as key value for the assessment of long-term aquatic toxicity. From the results of the tests a chronic risk of AES (C16 -18 and C18-unsaturated, 1-2.5 EO) Na (CAS 157627-95-7) on aquatic organisms cannot be excluded.
The substance does not significantly inhibit the respiration of activated sludge microorganisms (EC50-3h > 1000 mg/L a.i.). Hence, no effects of the substance are expected during the wastewater treatment in the sewage treatment plant.
