Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

In a test on ready biodegradability according to 301A biodegradation of the substance was < 1% after 28d. Therefore the substance ist considered as not readily biodegradable. Biodegradation is expected with adapted micro-organisms.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The ready biodegradation of the test substance was investigated in a study conducted according to OECD Guidelines for Testing of Chemicals No. 301A, “Ready Biodegradability; die away Test”, referenced as method C.4-A of Commission Directive 92/69/EEC, using predominantly domestic activated sludge microorganisms as inoculum. The biodegradation rate was determined by measurement of DOC consumption. This study is regarded as reliable without restriction and satisfies the guideline requirements for ready biodegradation. The test material attained <1% degradation after 28 days proved not to be readily biodegradable under the stringent test conditions.

These findings are in line with the results of a ring test (EUR 8631 — Ring-test programme 1 9 8 1 - 8 2 — Assessment of biodegradability of chemicals in water by manometric respirometry, 1982) reported in Painter, H A and King, E F. A respirometric method for the assessment for the ready biodegradability results of a ring test. Ecotoxicology and environmental safety 9(1), 1985, pp 6 – 16. Three participants asssessed the compound 1,3-benzene disulfonic acid, which is the organic constituent of the reaction mass. Two reported inhibition whithout degradation, the third used sulfonic acid adapted sludge. Biodegradation was found as 95% biodegradation after 28 days with 5 days delay and pass of the 10 day window at 15 days.

Therefore it is concluded that the organic constituent 1,3-benzene disulfonic acid is rapidly biodegraded with adapted micro-organisms.
