Acute toxicity
No experimental data are available regarding aquatic toxicity of tetrabutylammonium hydrogen sulphate. The substance is included by QSAR toolbox in the US-EPA New Chemicals categories of cationic (quaternary ammonium) surfactant. As reported in the explanation provided by QSAR toolbox cationic surfactants are biocidal to a wide array of species in the environment. Toxicity increases exponentially with increasing carbon chain length up to 16 carbons and then decreases with increasing chain length.
Predicted value by ECOSAR v.1.11 for tetrabutylammonium hydrogen sulphate using special class cationic surfactant (quaternary ammonium surfactants, tetralkyl) are:
LC50 96h fish = 269000 mg/l
LC50 48h Daphnid = 177.490mg/l
There is no reason of concern regarding short-term aquatic toxicity of tetrabutylammonium hydrogen sulphate based on these predicted values. The acute aquatic toxicity values for TBHS are higher than expected for generic surfactant probably due to the short length of the surfactant alkyl chain.
