Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

PBT assessment: overall result

PBT status:
the substance is not PBT / vPvB
Justification:

Octafluoropropane is a hydrophobic, lipophobic gas. It has a very low solubility in water, and all the evidence suggests it is rapidly lost from soil and sediment.

Studies on saturated perfluorocarbons, mostly looking at their use in medical applications, in both animals and humans, have shown no sign that they are metabolised in the body and consistently indicate that they do not accumulate in the body. Tests on octafluoropropane itself indicate that when injected into the blood (encapsulated in microbubbles) it has a half-life in the human body of under 2 minutes.

Likely routes of exposure:

Octafluoropropane will enter the atmosphere very quickly, and human exposure will be restricted to contact with the gas and inhalation.
