Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The substance has neither pyrophoric properties, nor does it react with water to form flammable gases. Being a liquid the flammability of solids is not relevant but the flash point has been determined instead - see section flash point.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
non flammable

Additional information

Experience in the handling and use of this substance has given no indication that it has pyrophoric properties. Comparison of the chemical structure (alkylated naphthalene) with the functional groups listed in the ECHA GIRCSA, Chapter R.7a: Endpoint Specific Guidance, R.7.1.10.3, May 2008, indicates the substance is unlikely to have pyrophoric properties. As a result, and according to Annex XI, section 1.2, based on the weight-of-evidence, testing for this endpoint is considered to be unnecessary.

Experience in the handling and use of the substance has indicated no properties associated with flammability on contact with water and as a result testing for this endpoint is considered to be unnecessary.

In accordance with section 2 of REACH Annex XI, the flammability (solids and gases) studies (required in section 7.10) do not need to be conducted as the substance is a liquid. The self-ignition temperature of the substance was found being 385 °C at 1013 hPa.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The substance being a liquid at ambient temperature has a flash point of 208 ºC (closed-cup) and an initial boiling point which could not be determined due to decomposition beginning at approx. 200 ºC. As a result, the substance does not meet the criteria for classification as flammable liquid according to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008, Annex I section 2.6.
