Description of key information

Yellow organic powder, with acetous smell. The substance melts at 157 °C and boils at 203 °C. It is very water soluble and has a negative log Kow.

APPEARANCE AND STATE

Fluorescent Brightener 363 is a yellow organic powder, with acetous smell; it is characterized by a D50 of 156 μm.

Thermal behaviour was investigated by the Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC): the substance melts at 175 °C and boils at 203 °C.

The vapour pressure of the test substance was calculation using the Modified Watson Correlation and resulted to be 38 Pa at 25 °C.

SOLUBILITY and PARTITION COEFFICIENT

Water solubility test was performed using the flask method. The concentration of the test substance in the aqueous solution was determined by UV detector. In the main test, to verify the accuracy of the analytical method, a fresh prepared standard solution (prepared with the test item) was measured in between the samples of the flask method. The recovery rate of the measured standard solutions was 99.5 %, which shows a good accuracy of the analytical method. The water solubility was determined to be 705.6 g/l at 20 °C.

The partition coefficient of test item was determined from the individual solubilities in water and n-octanol. The concentration of the test substance in the n-octanol was measured by UV detector. The water solubility in was determined in the specific test above mentioned; the solubility in n-octanol was determined by the flask method and the saturation concentration of the test item in n-octanol was determined to be 2.44 g/l. Therefore, the partition coefficent n-octanol/water (Pow) of the test item at 20 °C was determined to be 0.0035 (i.e. log Pow of -2.46). The recovery range for the determination of test item in n-octanol was from 97.0 % to 99.0 %, indicating a sufficient accuracy of the analytical method.

The substance can be considered as non surface active surface.

PHYSICAL HAZARDS

Fluorescent Brightener 366 does not ignite and propagate combustion.

The flammability test was carried out according to the EU method A.10. In the preliminary test, the test item did not ignite at room temperature using a flame as ignition source being applied for at least 2 minute. Thus, the performance of the main test was not necessary.

The auto-ignition temperature of the test substance was investigated in a study conducted according to EU Method A.15. The temperature of the oven and the sample were continuously recorded while the temperature of the oven was increased to approximately 550 °C. No auto-ignition was observed until 550 °C.

On the basis of the results obtained in the preliminary investigation, a complete explosiveness test was not necessary. The thermal behaviour of test item was assessed using the DSC analysis. The analysis shows no exothermic peak up to 350 °C; as a result, the overall energy release is below a critical trigger level of 500 J/g and the onset of energy release is below 500 °C.

Based on the chemical structure, the substance is expected to be incapable of reacting exothermically with combustible materials: it contains oxygen atoms, which are not chemically bonded to nitrogen or oxygen.
