Since no studies investigating the toxicity to microorganisms of fatty acids, C16-18, 2-hydroxyethyl ester (CAS 97281-23-7) are available, in accordance to Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5 a read across was conducted to the structurally related substance (CAS 85116-97-8).

The toxicity of fatty acids, C16-18, esters with diethylene glycol (CAS 85116-97-8) to activated sludge microorganisms was investigated in a toxicity control of a biodegradation study according to OECD 301B under GLP conditions (Best, 2015). The toxicity control contained activated sludge of a predominantly domestic sewage, reference substance (sodium benzoate) and the test substance at a concentration of 14.4 mg/L. The toxicity control attained 74% degradation after 14 d of incubation. Since more than 25% degradation was observed in the toxicity control, the substance is with high probability not toxic to aquatic microorganisms.The test item concentration in the toxicity control of 14.4 mg/L can be used as NOEC value for the toxicity to activated sludge microorganisms. Thus, a NOEC (14 d) of ≥ 14.4 mg/L resulted.

Based on the results from the structurally related read-across substance (in accordance to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5), it can be considered that fatty acids, C16-18, 2-hydroxyethyl ester (CAS 97281-23-7) will not exhibit toxic effects to microorganisms.
