Description of key information

Stability:

Hydrolysis studies were not conducted and met the criteria for data waiver. This is because the registered substance is produced, supplied and marketed in the presence of mineral oil solvent. Removal of this solvent is expected to cause a change in the equilibrium of the chemical structure of the benzene sulfonic acid and the associated salts resulting in a degradation of the chemical structure to a structure that is not representative of the substance being placed on the market in the EU. It is, in consequence, not possible to undertake any study of the registered substance in the absence of the solvent. This is further compounded by the fact that the presence of the solvent changes the physical state of the registered substance from solid to liquid and will therefore have a considerable effect on the result of any test conducted on the substance in solvent.

Biodegradation:

Biodegradation in water screening tests were performed on analog and structurally similar substances. These include studies performed according to OECD Guidelines 301D, 301F and 301B. None of these available studies showed ready biodegradation after 28-days.

Transport and Distribution:

The soil adsorption coefficient of benzene mono-C10-13-alkyl derivatives, distillation residues, sulfonated, sodium salts was determined by the computer program KOCWIN v2.00 (EPIWIN software v4.11) by US-EPA (ATL, 2016).This tool estimates the organic carbon-normalized adsorption coefficient for soil (and also for sediment), which is designated as Koc. Two different models are used for this estimation: the Sabljic molecular connectivity (MCI) method as well as with the traditional method which is based on logPow. The traditional method gives a logKoc ranging from 3.375 to 6.783 and the MCI method reveals a comparable value ranging from 3.964 to 7.101 as result. The MCI method is taken more seriously into account due to the fact, that it includes improved correction factors.

Bioaccumulation:

Data for a bioaccumulation in aquatic sediments was reviewed. In a biconcentration study performed according OECD Guideline 305 (Bioconcentration: Flow-through Fish Test), rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were exposed to 14-C SP6012 (oil free) at concentrations of 0.001 and 0.01 mg/L under dynamic conditions conditions. 14-C SP6012 (oil free) was not significantly accumulated in fish tissue and was observed to be eliminated over a 61-day depuration period. The calculated BCF was 45 and 38 at 0.001 mg/l (steady state and kinetic state respecitively) and 58 and 64 at 0.01 mg/l (steady state and kinetic state respectively).
