Relative Density:

The relative density of the test substance was calculated as shown in the following equation.

RD= W3 -W1/W2 -W1

W1 = weight of pycnometer

W2 = weight of pycnometer filled with water at 20°C

W3 = weight of pycnometer filled with test substance at 20°C

For example, the tare weight of the pycnometer was determined to be 35.7477 g. The average weight of the pycnometer filled with freshly boiled reagent water at 20.0°C was 62.0626 g. The weight of the pycnometer filled with test substance at 20.0°C for Replicate 2 was 60.9125 g.

Substituting these values into the above equation gave the following:

=(60.9125 g 35.7477 g) / (62.0626 g 35.7477 g)

Density:

The density of the test substance was calculated using the following equation.

density (g/mL) = relative density D × WT

WT = density of water at 20°C (0.9982 g/mL)

For example, the relative density for replicate 2 was calculated to be 0.9563. Substituting this value into the above equation gave the following:

density (g/mL) = 0.9563× 0.9982 g/mL = 0.9546 g/mL

Conclusions:
Relative density and density values of the test substance were calculated from 3 successive weighings that were within approximately 8 mg. The density of the test substance was calculated for each replicate using the density of water at 20°C, which is 0.9982 g/mL. The average relative density and density of the test substance were determined to be 0.9564 ± 0.0002 and 0.9547 ± 0.0002 g/mL at 20°C, respectively.
